Relax and enjoy the Hustle!

Posted : 16 years, 2 months ago on 8 January 2008 10:24 (A review of Kung Fu Hustle )

Perhaps you need a special mindset for this movie. When I went to see this with my wife after the first 5 minutes I thought: "Oh dear ... what have you done to her ..." But when we were back home, we pre-ordered the DVD right away, and I guess up today my wife has seen it more often than me. The fighting scenes are hilarious, over the top and tremendous fun, completely ignoring reality. Gags and comical scenes are deliberately eploited to the extreme - and beyond. Fun! Great fun!

For fans only?

Posted : 16 years, 2 months ago on 8 January 2008 08:31 (A review of Hogfather (2-Disc Edition) )

Though this is a well done and very faithful adaption of the book, I wonder if it works for people new to the Discworld phenomenon. The story itself might even be a little confusing. Nonetheless for fans it should be a blast, if just for looking for all the details: "Look, it's Hex! The anthill! Look, it's Rat Death! It's Nobby Nobbs! Look ..."

One of the best superhero movies ever!

Posted : 16 years, 2 months ago on 7 January 2008 02:37 (A review of Mystery Men )

It's not really a parody, it's a hommage. And that's what makes it good. When "real" superheroes are no longer available, in the moment of greatest danger only the "second choice heroes" are there to save the day - if they manage to stop bickering and start fighting.

A bit of a mess - but not bad.

Posted : 16 years, 2 months ago on 7 January 2008 02:32 (A review of King Kong (2 Disc Special Edition))

Too long, some weird choices in acting and character development, but nonetheless equally exciting, funny, sad and scary. I actually found the sequence in the primitive village on Skull Island terrifying. The special effects are awesome and worked very well for me. Far superiors, of course, to the dreadful Kong from the 70s.

Entertaining

Posted : 16 years, 2 months ago on 7 January 2008 02:26 (A review of Sahara [DVD] [2005])

While I expected almost nothing from it and the story is way over the top, the movie was suprisingly entertaining and funny and actually made me cheer for the heroes. The "sidekick" does not take a back seat and the chemistry between Matthew and Steve as adventuring buddies worked quite well. The romance didn't really work though, even with lovely Penelope Cruz.

Something different

Posted : 16 years, 2 months ago on 7 January 2008 02:19 (A review of Spirited Away - the Voyage of Chihiro (Hisaishi))

Refreshingly different from typical western fantasy and mythology themes, I found this movie equally exciting and enchanting. If you like animation movies and child heroes, give this one a try!
